Through our research, we strive to support and enhance design innovation and creativity. Our approach is interdisciplinary and mixed methodological, focusing on understanding and supporting design innovation through design cognition research, methodological and computational design support development, and meta-research to improve our cohesion and formality within the field of design research.
Expertise and Capabilities
The researchers in the EDRL have expertise in the following techniques:
- Cognitive human subjects based studies - ranging from studying design expert practitioners to end users for human centered design processes
- Machine learning techniques for data mining of large data sets, including unstructured text-based data
- Integration of engineering and industrial design expertise and techniques for approaching design research and development
- Education focused research, ranging from K-12 interventions and curriculum to higher education tools and scaffolding to facilitate effective learning in engineering and design
- Design process and methodology formalization through research based derivation and validation of design principles, heuristics, and guidelines
- Innovation and creativity support, with a strong emphasis on design by analogy, drawing inspiration from nature, existing technology, and design from far field areas of application
May, 2017 - Dr. Fu is awarded the Georgia Tech CSTAR Summer Fellowship to study design at Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Dr. Fu received a fellowship from the Georgia Tech Center for Space Technology and Research to study the early stage design process at Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the Summer of 2017. She will collaborate with the JPL A-Team.
April 7, 2017 - Myela Paige is Awarded 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship!
EDRL PhD student Myela Paige has been awarded the 2017 NSF GRFP! We are so proud to have her as part of our research group. Congratulations, Myela!
Myela is currently a first-year graduate research assistant in the EDRL. She is pursuing her Master of Science and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. She received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2015. Myela is passionate about helping students from all walks of life receive the same opportunities. Her research interests include engineering education, education policy, and educational solutions for low-resource communities. Myela enjoys volunteering with local Atlanta-area schools to engage students in STEM and talking to them about college and the opportunities she has been given.
May 3, 2016 - Dr. Fu visits Siemens Corporate Technology in Princeton, NJ
As part of an America Makes grant, in collaboration with Dr. David Rosen, Dr. Carolyn Seepersad, and Siemens, among many other collaborators, Dr. Fu visited Siemens Corporate Technology to discuss strategy and plan of attack for the 18 month project. She will serve as PI on the grant while Dr. Rosen (original and acting PI) is on leave of absence from GT.
January 14, 2016 - Grand Opening of the EDRL Space!
The lab is finally nearly complete and operational! A few shots below show our space and capabilities. Our lab is divided into two rooms, the student work space and the experiment room. The student work space is design to be modular, comfortable, and flexible for productivity, style of work, and a variety of tasks. The experiment room is set up as a space that can change from individual human subject data collection modules to group data collection or conference room use. White board and magnetic walls, pull down blinds, and adjustable furniture maximize our flexibility within the lab.
June 16, 2015 - Dr. Fu has been selected as one of CETL's Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows for 2015-2016
From CETL's webpage:
"The Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows experience is designed to gather together an interdisciplinary group of early career faculty for pedagogically-focused support and professional development. The aim is to broaden perspectives with insight into evidence-based best practices and exposure to new and innovative teaching methods. In addition, Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows are given the opportunity to develop and pilot initiatives that can be used as the basis for the education component of major award applications (such as the NSF Career Award)."

May 18, 2015 - Dr. Fu Receives ASME Atlanta Section Award "Early Career Engineer of the Year"
April 2 & 3, 2015 - Lockheed Martin Visit
Dr. Fu visits Lockheed Martin with her ME1770 students and colleagues to learn about how aircrafts are assembled. Thanks for the tour!
